The Academic Senate of FA BUT is convening an extraordinary meeting to support the independence of public service media
The Student Chamber of the Academic Senate of BUT and the Student Chamber of the Academic Senate of
Masaryk University have issued a joint statement in support of the independence
of Czech Television and Czech Radio. In their statement, they express concerns
about the proposed changes to the funding of public service media and highlight
the potential implications for their stability and independence.
“As student senators from Brno’s universities, we jointly
express our support for the independence of Czech Television and Czech Radio.
We share concerns about the implications of the proposed abolition of licence
fees and warn against measures that could jeopardise the stability and
independence of public service media,” states the joint declaration by the
student chambers, amongst other things.
In response to recent developments, the Academic Senate of
FA BUT has convened an
extraordinary meeting to discuss proposals to support the protest strike by
employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio planned for 3 November, as well as
to endorse the statements adopted by representatives of universities and the
academic community.
The extraordinary meeting of the Academic Senate of FA BUT will take place on 2
November at 12.30 pm.
“We are committed to the mission of universities, as
enshrined in the current Higher Education Act, as well as to the traditions of
the academic community, which defends freedom and democracy, and we accept our
responsibility towards society and our active role in public debate. Freedom of
speech is a fundamental prerequisite for democracy. Universities are expected
to be politically impartial; however, the independence of public service media
is not a clash between political parties, but a matter concerning the
foundations of democratic and civil society, just as academic freedom and
self-governance are the cornerstones upon which our institution is built,”
state the organisers of the extraordinary meeting.
