Architecture students are bringing a spa back to Karlovice
This June, fifteen students from the Faculty of Architecture
at BUT will revive a forgotten tradition of climatic spas in Karlovice. During
the summer school Dílna, they will design and build fifteen wooden structures
set within the Jeseníky landscape with their own hands. This year’s edition is
themed “Breathing” and draws inspiration from the village’s former identity as
a place of tranquility, clean air, and time spent in nature.
Until 1945, Karlovice was a popular summer resort where
people came to relax and “take a breath” in the broader sense of the word. It
is precisely this now almost forgotten layer of local memory that the students
will attempt to bring back to life through small architectural interventions in
the landscape around the Karlovice Rychta.
Over the course of six days, they will go through the entire
process from initial sketches to 1:1-scale implementation. They will work without
computers—using only paper, pencil, and wood. The resulting structures are
designed to respond to the specific conditions of the site, such as light,
terrain, or views, and will offer visitors a space to pause, sit, and
experience the landscape in a new way.
The Dílna 2026 Summer School of Architecture will take place
from June 20 to 25 in Karlovice in the Jeseníky Mountains. It is organized by
the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology in cooperation
with the DUHA Jeseníky Movement and the municipality of Karlovice. The
resulting installations will remain freely accessible in the landscape
throughout the summer.
