FA VUT and AA School presents international workshop Transformative Nature of Urbanism
The Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology, in collaboration with the prestigious London-based Architectural Association School of Architecture, will host the second edition of its international urbanism workshop from May 8 to 16, 2025.
Following the success of last year's workshop focused on housing near the river and train station, this year's event will take place at KUMST, a vibrant creative hub in the heart of Brno. The focus will shift to the revitalisation of a large brownfield site bordered by Koliště, Cejl, Křenová streets and the Svitava River.
Theme for 2025: Transformative Nature of Urbanism
The workshop will explore the transformation of neglected urban territories through new forms of spatial infrastructure. Students and faculty from both institutions will investigate how architectural design can catalyse broader social, economic, and environmental change.
The workshop organisers say, "We are interested in how the development of a single block or building can influence an entire area and how design can create space for new forms of collaboration, typologies, and ways of life. "
An International Team and Interdisciplinary Approach
The workshop involves over 60 students and 20 tutors, including Lawrence Barth, Florian Dirschedl, Dominic Papa, Stephen Sinclair, Jorge Fiori, Elena Pascolo, Yasmina Aslakhanova, and Adithya Premraj from the AA School.
From the Faculty of Architecture: Bára Ponešová, Marie Joja, Kristýna Smržová, Alex Bykov, Szymon Rozwałka, Karin Písaříková, and Monika Konrad. Students will be divided into four working groups led by mixed teams of tutors from both institutions.
The program includes lectures, discussions, interim reviews, and final presentations responding to the site’s specific conditions and potential. The workshop emphasises sustainability, participation, biodiversity, and economic renewal through architecture.
Public Lectures and Broader Dialogue
Throughout the workshop, public lectures will be held by several invited speakers, including Tomáš Kozelský, the Chybík+Krištof studio, Martin Všetečka, Jan Malý Blažek, Tomáš Samec Hořejší, the Dean of FA BUT, Radek Suchánek, and Pavel Štěpán, representative of the Museum of Romani Culture.
A Long-Term Perspective
This workshop is part of a broader research framework aimed not only at developing urban strategies but also at reflecting on current challenges in architecture and urbanism. Outcomes from both editions will be compiled into a forthcoming publication featuring scholarly texts, interviews, and analyses exploring the role of architectural thinking in transformative urban processes.
The workshop is supported by the City of Brno, the City Architect’s Office (KAM), technical experts, and other local stakeholders from the public, private, and non-profit sectors.
