Building Back Better: A Journey into Odesa’s Future

Every city tells a story, but some stories are written in ruins and rebuilt with resilience. From January 20 to 31, 2025, students and faculty from the Faculty of Architecture Brno University of Technology, Kharkiv School of Architecture, Limerick University, and Warsaw University of Technology embarked on a transformative workshop. This international collaboration, held simultaneously in Warsaw and Lviv, focused on reimagining Odesa’s future in the face of war.

A Collective Vision: Learning Beyond Borders
From the very first day, participants became part of a global conversation. Split into four teams, they examined Odesa at different scales—the sea, the city, the district, and the home. The goal was not only to analyze but to feel: how does a city at war shape the emotions of its inhabitants? What does rebuilding mean beyond bricks and mortar?
Teams in Warsaw and Lviv were connected through live discussions and shared insights. Experts, urbanists, and local voices joined the conversation, offering perspectives that merged analysis with lived experience.
The ideas did not remain confined to sketches and discussions. The teams crafted a dual exhibition—one in Warsaw and another in Lviv. These exhibitions aimed to translate the complexity of urban post-war recovery into something tangible and emotionally resonant. Visitors were invited to step into the experience of Odesa’s potential future and reflect on the layers of history, loss, and hope embedded in urban space.

The Impact: Learning, Growth, and Connection
This workshop was more than an academic exercise—it was a personal and professional transformation for everyone involved. Participants gained firsthand experience of international collaboration, urban resilience, and the power of architecture in times of crisis. They were left with more than just knowledge; they carried stories, emotions, and a shared responsibility for shaping the cities of tomorrow.

What’s Next? The Journey Continues
Odesa’s story is still being written. The discussions, designs, and visions generated in this workshop are only the beginning. What role will architecture play in rebuilding cities affected by conflict? How can design foster healing? These questions remain open—an appeal for a responsible approach to helping the attacked country.
