Exhibition Opening: Chudoba (Poverty)

Poverty, which has accompanied human society from its beginnings, is as much a public evil as a personal misfortune. It is an all-encompassing problem that has affected religion, ideology, politics, economics and art. For many, the poverty of others has been the key to power and wealth, has moved history, profoundly affects our present, and will shape the future of the world. It is a mirror of society, a philosophical and sociological concept, an abstract emotion, a means of manipulation, a plight, a power factor and a deterrent.
The exhibition entitled Chudoba, held simultaneously at the Horácké Gallery and Horácké Museum in Nové Město na Moravě and the Gallery and Museum of the Highlands of Havlíčkův Brod, is an attempt to capture poverty, its causes and consequences in the past and present. The emphasis is on artworks that convey poverty itself and the various ways of perceiving it. Poverty has never been eradicated, and there is no sign that it ever will be. Of course, the exhibition on poverty is itself a paradox that permeates the individual works and the entire curatorial concept. But it is guided by an idea best articulated by the eyewitness to poverty, Nelson Mandela:
"Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery or racial intolerance. It was created by humans and can only be destroyed by humanity."
