Workshop in Japan: Inspiration from Traditional and Modern Architecture

From November 2 to 17, 2024, students from the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology (VUT) embarked on a study trip to Japan. The main goal of this journey was to foster collaboration with Japanese universities and gain new insights into architecture and design.

During a workshop held at Setsunan University in Osaka (November 3–10), Czech and Japanese students, under the guidance of Professor Kashima, participated in joint presentations, hands-on assignments, and cultural exchanges. Together, they visited prominent landmarks, including the temple complexes in Kyoto and the modernist Yagi House in Osaka.

The Yagi House, designed in the 1930s, is a perfect example of how Japanese architectural principles merge minimalistic aesthetics with a focus on functionality and harmony with the environment. It features clean lines, open spaces, and a thoughtful integration of interior and exterior. The use of modern materials and advancements in hygiene is masterfully combined with traditional Japanese elements. For the students, this visit served as an inspiration for creatively blending tradition with modern architectural approaches. They also produced numerous sketches and drawings during their stay, which will soon be exhibited in Brno.

After the workshop, the group toured the islands of the Seto Inland Sea (Seto Naikai), a region that offers a unique model of revitalizing disappearing communities through art and architecture. On Naoshima and Teshima, students admired art installations and architectural works by Tadao Ando and Ryue Nishizawa, which uniquely integrate nature, art, and architecture. A visit to a former refinery on Inujima, transformed into an eco-friendly exhibition space by architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, provided further inspiration for combining sustainability with modern design.

The trip was not only an opportunity to form friendships and professional connections but also a profound source of inspiration for the students’ future creative endeavors. We extend our gratitude to everyone involved in this unique event and look forward to future collaborations with our Japanese partners.

MgA. Karin Písaříková, Ph.D.
