International conference Placemaking Brno will bring together creators of public spaces

On 24-25 October 2024, Brno will host the International Placemaking Brno conference, which will focus on the creation of public spaces and transforming them into living places for people. The organizer of the conference is Archipop, and the conference is under the auspices of Placemaking Europe. Events, which will take place at the Kumst creative hub and in cooperation with the Vesna Society, will welcome prominent Czech and international experts in urban planning, architecture and community planning. During the two-day programme, prominent representatives of placemaking and will open discussions on the topics of tactical urbanism, strategy temporary use, streets for children, community involvement in urban planning, inclusion in architecture, and urban revitalization.

Placemaking contributes to the creation of places to which we build a relationship with, care for and spend time in, whether we're just walking along a path from work or meeting our neighbours. And it's up to us to decide how these places will be look like," says Marie Joja, director of Archipop.

The conference will provide insight into strategies for creating places that are not only functional but have a unique identity because of the people who live, work and spend their leisure time there. The programme will also present examples of placemaking implementations, including case studies from European cities, and will offer interactive workshops.

"Our aim is to reach a wide range of conference participants - from representatives of city governments, the creative industries, the professional public to to members of local communities. We want to connect Brno's creative scene with partners European partners from Placemaking Europe and Plateau Urbain", adds Barbora Ponešová, member of Archipop and co-organizer of the event.

The format of the conference itself demonstrates thinking along the lines of placemaking: connecting two institutions in a neighborhood, selecting speakers to topics across the professional spectrum, age, and gender composition, to the program includes lectures, an exhibition, workshops and targets different target groups. The presentations will be held in Czech or English (without simultaneous translation).

In the month of October there will be parallel thematic exhibitions in Kumst (10-30 October) and the Mini Gallery of the FA BUT in Brno (1-25 October), mapping Archipop's collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture and the Vesna Society, all under the Vesna Lab. Opening ceremonies will take place on the first days of the exhibitions at 6 p.m.
