Architect Sigurd Lewerentz became famous for his striking works, but throughout his life he avoided interviews and worked in isolation - his personality was shrouded in mystery. Lewerentz's realisations have a similarly mysterious air, but the film at least lightly exposes and at the same time feeds into this mystery surrounding the artist and his works. His unique attention to detail and work with materials were ahead of their time and are still inspiring and relevant today. The documentary draws primarily on previously undiscovered audio and video recordings made by his close collaborator and friend, Bernt Nyberg, at the end of Lewerentz's life. Director Sven Blume takes a similarly personal approach to Lewerentz as he did to his grandfather in his previous poetic film, Crooked Lines of Beauty.
1. 10. 2024 at 20:00 What A Plan for Paradise (A Plan for Paradise)(Kati Juurus, Finland, 2023, 74 min, Finnish, Nepali, English, Czech subtitles)
What happens when a Finnish architecture studio wins a competition to design an urban plan for a new city in a Nepalese valley? The euphoria of winning and passion for the challenge is quickly replaced by frustration at the clash between Western thinking and an Eastern culture that clings strongly to tradition. With Kathmandu and other major cities bursting at the seams with urbanisation and relentless migration, the Nepalese government has decided to build a new city for 600,000 people. Finnish architects try to bring order to the valley's spontaneous development, leading to a number of humorous situations.
October 2, 2024 at 8:00 pm The Architects of Hope: The First Steps in Rebuilding Ukraine(Paul Thomas, UK, 2024, 75 min)
As Russia continues to destroy Ukraine's cities, Ukrainian architects seek to rebuild them. How to proceed now? Many ambitious projects no longer make sense in the current situation, and new demands are emerging for buildings and public space. Buildings should be stable and resilient and more accessible to people with war injuries. The film follows five leading Ukrainian architects as they come to terms with the situation - finding new spaces for their ruined studios, rethinking their current approach to their work and, most importantly, not relenting in their efforts to rebuild or transform war-affected areas. For architects, hope is not just wishful thinking, but a necessity to realise a vision of the future shape of cities.
The film will be introduced by Alex Bykov, with a discussion after the screening.
