Symposium Architecture - no science! - Mediating architecture, education and inspiration

Symposium Architecture - No Science! with the subtitle "Mediating Architecture, Education and Inspiration" will be held on 21 February 2024 at the Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology in Brno and will present ways to bring architecture closer to children and the public and increase their awareness of the environment in which we live. Seven experts from the field of architecture, art and pedagogy, including Rostislav Koryčánek, Krištof Kintera, Šárka Svobodová and others, will present their views on the topic.
The symposium with inspirational workshops were created within the framework of the project Understandable Architecture, which connects the neighbouring educational institutions of the Department of Art Education of the Faculty of Arts of MUNI and the FA of the BUT from September 2023. The project aims to increase interest in architecture among pupils in almost the entire range of our education system, from kindergartens to primary schools to secondary schools.
Architecture - no science! - mediation of architecture, education and inspiration for students and the general public - will take place on Wednesday 21.2.2024 in the auditorium of the Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology, Poříčí 5 in Brno. Lucie Valdhansová, an architectural historian, will present a paper on the Architectural Manual as a tool for popularising architecture, Šárka Svobodová, an architectural populariser, will talk about the issue of browsing through architecture, and Rostislav Koryčánek, a curator, will discuss the topic of Exhibition as a specific situation of architecture, Krištof Kintera will present the sculptures of houses, illustrator David Böhm and architect Osamu Okamura will introduce the audience to the City for Everyone project, and educator Michaela Casková, based in Finland, will talk about forest pavilions for children.
Following the symposium, there will also be inspirational workshops for the students of the participating faculties and for interested members of the public by external lecturers Lucie Štůlová Vobořilová, Michaela Matysová, Romana Horáková, Martina Kárová and Jana Kostelecka, through which the participants will try out already established educational programmes from practice. More information about the workshops can be found here.
In the framework of the Understandable Architecture project, the team of artists and educators Andrea Kaňkovská, Susan Maly and architects Anna Kotlabová and Adela Šoborová are developing concepts for educational programmes for kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, which will be piloted in participating Brno schools during the spring. Children and adolescents will learn about the environment that architecture and humans create through a sculpture laboratory, working with their own bodies or documenting space. On the basis of the experience gained, methodological materials will be developed, which the faculty will offer for widespread use in education. The emerging educational programs will also be included in the Field Map of Art.The symposium will take place on 21 February 2024 at 9.30 am at the Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology at  Poříčí 5 in Brno.
Symposium registration is available here.
The event is part of the Comprehensible Architecture project, which is funded through the European Union's Next Generation EU National Recovery Plan. Project number: 0310000211
