List of new (mandatory) elective courses for summer semester 2024

The Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology is opening a series of new (mandatory) elective courses for the summer semester, featuring several new foreign lecturers and guests. The first round of registrations will take place on January 24, 2024 (09:00–22:00) through the Studis system.

List of new courses:

UT3-T
Modern Development and Theory of Urban Design
Lecturer: Ing. arch. MArch Jan Kristek, Ph.D.

This course focuses on contemporary urban development and theory, modern concepts of urbanism, and their current interpretation. It builds chronologically on seminars addressing the development of cities in the 19th and 20th centuries, but completion of these seminars is not a prerequisite. The course explores the relationships between cities, technology, economy, politics, demography, and culture. Teaching involves reading theoretical and historical texts, followed by their interpretation through graphic presentations.


BAM-T
Popularization of Architecture
Lecturers: Mgr. Lucie Valdhansová & Mgr. Rostislav Koryčánek

The course is part of the project "Comprehensible Architecture – Mediation of Architecture to Children." It covers various methods of popularizing architecture, including three workshops by external lecturers, a one-day symposium, and architectural excursions.

SHP-TE
Seminar of Visiting Lecturer
Lecturer: doc. Dr. Or Ettlinger univ. dipl. inž. rač.

Design unfolding through making.Students will learn how to unfold the potential of a given location through the design process, considering specific site conditions and available materials, using the methodology developed by Christopher Alexander.


CUL-TE
The Culture Lab
Lecturers: M.Sc. Servie Boetzkes & M.Sc. Gabriel Raúl Pena

Students will focus on researching and analyzing existing urban and architectural places, capturing them through drawing techniques and texts, creating architectural publications in the process.


PKA-N
Organization and Production of Cultural Events
Lecturer: MgA., MA., Dott. Karin Písaříková, Ph.D. et Ph.D.

The course introduces the basic process of organizing social events and festivals, understanding the goals of the entire event, and the needs of participants. It includes team democratic discussions, role assignments, and autonomy in subsequent task fulfillment. The production aspects, including financial planning and budget preparation, as well as ensuring the organizational aspects of the event, are covered.


PAR-WE
Workshop Permaculture in Architecture
Lecturers: Dipl. Ing. arch. Kristien Ring & Ing. arch. Adéla Šoborová & Ing. arch. Anna Kotlabová

Students will explore the principles of permaculture design and their interpretation in architecture, focusing on applications in architectural designs within urbanized environments. The workshop includes three concentrated blocks during the semester: theoretical foundation, implementation, and reflection on interventions in the faculty's surroundings.


HFH-WE
Workshop on Hybrid Forms of Housing
Lecturers: Arch. Jacopo Gresleri, Ph.D. & Ing. arch. Radek Toman, Ph.D.

The course examines collective and collaborative hybrid housing, its evolution, orientation, typological issues, up to contemporary questions. Students will analyze typologies of Brno residential buildings from various periods, and create an imaginative residential project combining approaches from different studied periods. The seminar will run throughout the semester and will be complemented by an intensive weekly workshop in April led by Jacopo Gresleri.
