Statement regarding the tragic events at the Charles University in Prague

We are thinking of the victims of the horrendous act at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University in Prague, and we empathize with the immeasurable pain of their parents, siblings, classmates and teachers. In this context, we would like to share information about the collection for assisting the families of the victims, contacts for crisis support, and the BUT Rector's statement issued on December 22nd.

"The events at the Faculty of Arts at Charles University, acknowledging the horror of the act, have shaken us all with their unbelievable nature and deeply wounded us. The gradual unfolding of the circumstances surrounding the act renders it utterly incomprehensible and accentuates its heinousness, compounded by the proximity to the holiday season. Dismay, sorrow, sympathy, solidarity, the need to help, and indignation at the injustice are the strongest emotions stirred within us by this tragedy. Injustice has befallen unsuspecting victims whose lives were extinguished and the injured, whom we hope will succeed in their struggle for health and life. The practical helplessness in foreseeing such personal failures renders this tragedy even more incomprehensible and unbelievable.

This tragic event has made December 21, 2023, a dark day in the history of Czech higher education, an indelible mark in the history of the Czech nation.

Personally, I am deeply affected by this event. With regret for the lives of innocent victims, I express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved. To the injured, I wish strength in their fight for life and health, and a swift return among us. On behalf of Brno University of Technology and all our employees and students, I express full support to Charles University. I also appreciate the efforts of security and rescue forces in managing the situation.

At our university, I have taken immediate measures to review the security settings and have urged the leadership of faculties, university departments, and components to collaborate and pay increased attention to security in university buildings and premises. I have also requested them to monitor information and join initiatives supporting Charles University organized by Charles University.

In the context of this event, we are even more acutely aware of the need to devote increased attention to a support system and counseling for students and staff in distressing situations or facing mental health issues, even during this Christmas time and during exams and assessments, as all problems in the world always have some reasonable and humane resolution.

Ladislav Janíček"
