Appointment of extraordinary professors Monika Konrad and Kristien Ring at the Faculty of architecture BUT

During the November meeting of the BUT Scientific Council, Monika Konrad and Kristien Ring were appointed extraordinary professors at the Faculty of Architecture. The title of extraordinary professor was created in order to enable the work of academic workers who have achieved a comparable position abroad or hold the position of important experts who have at least 20 years of experience in the given field.

Monika Konrad is an architect, urban planner, researcher, and strategist; she gained a professional background in studios like OMA, Claus en Kaan
Architecten and as a project director at consulting company Strelka KB. She graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Poznań University of Technology, the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, and Lund University. She is an author of numerous urban standards and strategic projects on a citywide scale and a designer of urban and architectural projects in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Monika Konrad is the Deputy Director of the Municipal Office of Architecture and Spatial Planning in the City of Warsaw, working on the Warsaw Strategic Masterplan as a chief designer.

Since September 2023, Monika Konrad has led a design studio dedicated to various challenges in urban planning, architecture, and environmental and social issues. The studio cooperates with the Warsaw-based School of Forms and C40 Cities, whose mission is to halve the emissions of member cities within a decade.

At FA BUT, she would like to focus on didactical work and research projects. In the following semesters, she is interested in  teaching at a design studio, becoming a specialist supervisor for the PhD topics and contributing to other seminars with lectures.

Kristien Ring is an architect, curator, and principal of the interdisciplinary studio AA-PROJECTS, which is engaged in the production of interdisciplinary projects on future oriented themes in the realm of architecture and urban planning. Kristien has held a Professorship at the University of South Florida, USA, was a Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield, England, and Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Western Australia. Kristien was the founding Director of the DAZ German Center for Architecture in Berlin (2004 -2011), and the co-founder of the gallery Suitcase Architecture (2001 – 2005).

Kristien is known for her research project SELF-MADE CITY that explores the self-determined design of spaces and buildings for living and working and their impact on the quality of the urban development of our cities. Her research URBAN LIVING looks at components of urban development and affordable housing as strategies for the future. She is an author and editor of several publications and she continually presents her published work at international conferences, including a TEDx talk, lecture at the AIA-CFA in New York, as well as at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Kristien’s current research moves in the direction of natural systems and it looks at how we can use these to create better living environments. The topic of regenerative design will be the focus of her work in Brno. It is a process-oriented holistic approach to design that develops solutions to create resilient and equitable systems that combine the needs of society with the integrity of nature.
