2nd place in the international competition - The award-winning project of the new Brno district solves the climate crisis

Patrícia Pecková won 2nd place in the international urban Urban Design Award competition. The project of a new neighborhood on Brno's Červení kopci combines the principles of natural urban shaping defined in the 19th century by Camillo Sittem with the current solution to the climate crisis. Through effective spatial arrangement, waste management and the choice of suitable materials the surroundings of the Kohn brickyard will be transformed into a carbon-neutral district.

Semester work from the studio of Gabriel Kopáčik at the Faculty architecture of the BUT in Brno with the name Kohnova cihelna - Carbon neutral district deals with the construction of a new district that will reflect a contemporary solution climate crisis, mainly caused by overproduction of CO2. The author proposes the district as a functioning organism that produces the same amount of O2 as CO2. Positive production oxygen goes against the wide profile of the streets and the extensive courtyards they provide large areas for planting greenery. Thanks to the effective division, or mix functional zones of living, work and recreation and compliance with walking distances car traffic in the territory is reduced to a necessary minimum. Cyclists and pedestrians can move comfortably and safely through pleasant streets in scale i shaped, designed according to the principles described by Camillo Sitte in the 19th century.

The area of ??the former Kohn brickyard, in the southern part of Brno, is currently an abandoned place. Although it is located near the city center, it is surrounded by a diverse environment with a wide range of predominantly suburban atmospheres, such as prefab houses from the 1970s, plots of single-family houses, industrial estates and shopping centers, gardening colonies, National Natural Monument Červený kopec, the picturesque workers' colony Kamenka, or houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, e.g. the monastery of St. Elizabeth.

The proposal follows the specifics of the place and the diverse development Surroundings. It brings an urban solution based on a block structure that is for typical of the historical part of Brno. In the imaginary heart of the district - Kohn's brickyard, the author proposes all necessary civic amenities such as a post office, market, ATM, social hall and others. The center gives residents a common identity and supports community. The district represents the contemporary response of the young generation of architects to the climate crisis of today. It assumes the residents' interest in this urgent topic and their efforts moving forward sustainability.

“This contextual approach could serve as inspiration for many new development projects in suburban areas of European cities and municipalities," states the competition jury in its assessment.

Competition for the best urban planning projects of eight schools architecture of the Visegrad Group won the development project of the Strakonic Tereza center Řihová from the Faculty of Architecture of CTU. From the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University in Brno, the project "Delirious Sarajevo" by Zora Bogárová under the direction of Radek Toman also received an award. The analyzes the problems in the Bosnian capital, which include excessive the use of private car transport and offers a solution in the form of a public network cycle paths.

A total of 62 works were entered into the competition. Jury it decided in the composition of Mateusz Gyurkovich, Igor Hobza, Jan Mackovič, Katarína Smatanová, Péter Szaló, Agnieszka Szumilas and Radek Toman. She chose among the awardees projects that focus on effective replenishment of centers, appropriate scales public spaces or peripheral development. "Some student proposals se they may seem unrealistic, crazy, but sometimes you need to be radical in order to they realized the need for change," mentions judge Agnieszka Szumilas from Vratislavská university.
