Architecture students transformed Olomouc's flood protection into a power plant with a field

What form could the flood protection landscaping along the Morava River in the northern part of Olomouc take? Students of the Faculty of Architecture at Brno University of Technology worked on just such an assignment. Student works, which represent the conceptual form of flood protection measures in the north of the city, will be on display at the exhibition Touches of Moravia. It will open with an opening on Wednesday, 8 March 2023 at 5 pm in the mirror hall of the Olomouc City Hall in Hynaisova Street. The exhibition, which will run until 24 March, will also be accompanied by a workshop on the theme of the architectural and landscape design competition for Phase III of the flood protection measures on 15 March at 5 pm.

The Brno students worked on the conceptual design of the third stage of the flood protection measures and on the detailed design of their parts under the guidance of architect Jan Mléčka and landscape architect Iva Novotná. "The Morava River is of great importance for Olomouc. Therefore, it is important to create a harmonious environment where the city is protected but at the same time in harmony with nature," say the authors of the project. For example, they have created a cascade of natural river beaches in Lazce, where the river flows, and an amphitheatre in the Černovír district, which would serve to relax people in the area. The concept of the Brno architecture students' designs is based primarily on making the river accessible to the inhabitants of Olomouc, creating places of residence and connecting local districts. It also has an educational dimension in making visible contemporary and sustainable solutions to situations in the cities through which the river flows. Another part of the exhibition of student work, symbolically called Futurama, therefore also shows the cooperation with Palacký University and serves to present research on progressive agricultural cultivation technologies. Whether by combining agricultural land use with photovoltaic power plants, growing plants on water while making use of existing water areas or intensive vertical farming methods using hydroponic or aeroponic principles.

This is a unique collaboration between the City of Olomouc, the competition promoter, the Faculty of Architecture of the BUT and the administrator of the CCEA MOBA competition. The project by Brno architecture students will also become the basis for the public debate on the architectural and landscape design competition for the third stage of flood protection measures, which will be announced by the city. It is to fulfil not only the main objective, the protection of the city against floods, but also to include all other functions that are connected with the river. "Our aim is to restore the city-forming functions of the Morava River so that a river zone can be created around it, which as the green backbone of the city will offer the public space for physical activities and recreation in a natural environment. These flood protection measures will also include the revitalisation of the river in a way that is close to nature. We can look forward to the river and aquatic habitats being given more space for their use," says Deputy Mayor Tomáš Pejpek.

The forthcoming stage III of the flood protection measures will build on the improvements to the Morava River in the centre of Olomouc completed last year. From the bridge on Komenského Street continue
