International workschop: Transient Architecture

From August 24th to August 8th a summer school called Transient Architecture will take place at the faculty. It will be an international workshop created in cooperation with Ariel University from Israel. The topic of the summer school is temporary architecture - the result should be a proposal for a temporary building/installation on the site of the future Moravian Jewish Museum. 10 places are reserved for FA students. Apply by email to: zadrapova@vutbr.cz

“What can we define as temporary architecture? And is it anything new? Temporary architecture … can be labelled as purposely short-lived structures, exhibitions and programmes that create experimental sites for interaction and engagement. They can range from a tiny travelling theatre and floating cinema to a community lido on an abandoned railway site or a haphazard theatre made entirely from scrap material. Many are self-initiated, involving do-it-yourself building and grass-roots platforms for collective, participatory design. Usually, they're experimental and innovative, questioning the form of permanent architecture gone before. Always, they're for public use and involve the public as key protagonists in their formation and performance.” Cate St Hill. This is Temporary - How Transient Projects are Redefining Architecture, 2016.

The Summer Seminar in Brno 2022, a joint initiative of the Department of Architecture of Brno University of Technology and School of architecture of Ariel University, will be dedicated to the exploration of the ever-growing potential of Transient Architecture, as it is defined above. Temporary architecture endeavors arise from diverse origins – artistic, commercial, political and recreational – and have the capacity to pave the way for new and better conceptions of the roles and tasks that the architectural field should engage in in our times.

As a case study, the students will be asked to propose a short-term architectural intervention in a lot located in the center of Brno, upon which, within the next few years, the new Brno Jewish Museum will be erected. The students are required to incorporate in their design urban, artistic, cultural and historical aspects. The design should stem from an attentive and insightful interpretation of the urban and cultural fabric of contemporary Brno. To what extent temporary architecture is obliged to address contextual considerations, such as style, scale and programmatic issues. Another challenge is to propose a relevant architectural interpretation for inherent tension existing between the transience of the installation and the designated program of a museum dedicated to the commemoration of the Jews of Czech Republic.
