FA BUT students designed a solution for an unused location in Líšeň, Brno

Since December 2011, Brno has been motivating students of local universities to solve challenging topics assigned by the city and bring unencumbered and new perspectives on solving a number of agendas. The original Masaryk University student competition MUNISS has gradually expanded to include Brno University of Technology and Mendel University in Brno. Multiprofessional teams compete across universities, which have a unique opportunity to work on real tasks and challenges of city development. In ten years, 120 student teams have already participated, working on over 40 topics.

This year's theme of the MUNISS competition was a proposal for the revitalization of an unused site near the Brno Zetor complex. The area is a so-called greenfield with a size of about 100 ha in an attractive location between two densely built-up districts Židenice and Líšeň and near the national natural monument Stránská skála. At present, the potential of the site is completely untapped and is used for agriculture. The aim of the competition work was to find a form and method of land use that will take into account the limits and specifics of the site, future form and use of the site with regard to the needs of a modern city.

"The competition is of great importance for Brno, it has made it possible to teach the city to function as a living laboratory, where you can discuss, prepare, create and search for answers to the societal challenges that are posed for Brno. As an evaluator of this year's work, I must admit that the students' ideas are excellent and will serve as a solid basis for future proposals for the site behind Zetor, "said Tomáš Koláčný, Deputy Mayor of Brno.

Student teams worked on the proposals from December 2020 to the end of April 2021. During the course, students participated in online thematic workshops with experts from the Czech Republic and abroad, and an excursion to Vienna is planned, which had to be postponed due to an unfavorable pandemic situation. Subsequently, the evaluation was carried out by an expert jury composed of representatives of the city management, employees of the Department of Strategic Development and Cooperation of the City of Brno, the Faculty of Architecture of BUT and the Faculty of Economics and Administration of Masaryk University.

There will also be a specialized workshop on the MUNISS competition for representatives of municipalities, universities and other interested parties at the fair, on Wednesday, June 2, from 9:30 a.m. Participants will have the opportunity to know the goals and history of the competition, and will also discuss in detail the specific topics that students have addressed for the city in recent years. The next year of the interuniversity student competition MUNISS will start again at the end of this year. More information about the competition is available on the competition website or Facebook.
